2019 CARA Nominations Announced

The much anticipated annual Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards nominations were announced today and both long-standing favorites and new stars are among the talents honored.

Standouts include Boston-based experimental group Birdland Avenue who landed five nominations for Come Around including Best Non-Scholastic Debut Album, Best Electronic/Experimental Album, Best Pop Album, Best Electronic/Experimental Song (“Rabbit Hole”), Best Original Song by a Professional Group (“Breeze Baby”) and DCappella who earned four nominations for Best Non-Scholastic Debut Album, Best Rock Song (“Immortals”), Best Showtunes/Soundtrack/Theme Song (“The Glory Days”), and Best Professional Arrangement for a Non-Scholastic Group (“Immortals”).

We also saw multiple nominations for The Swingles, Pentatonix多么幸福 East West Collective, and Rebel Bit.

On the Scholastic side A Cappella Academy, The G-Men, The A Cappella Group, VoiceBox, The Coda Conduct, The Sons of Pitches, and Dragon Scales were among some of the groups heavily recognized for their work this year.

2009 International Quartet Champions Crossroads led in barbershop music with four nominations in barbershop and arrangements.

See the full list of nominations and then follow along as we catch up with nominees and broadcast live from BOSS and the CARA Ceremony in April.

New Tunesday – November 13, 2018

In addition to all of the great variety of a cappella you can hear ’round the clock here at Acaville Radio, we’re going to bring you some bonus releases each Tuesday to make sure you’re finding all of the latest and greatest this talented community has to offer.

Here are our favorites this week:

AcaLumni Project

What do you get when you pull together a virtual group from all over the world, combine all of the overdone a cappella songs into a Weird Al Yankovich polka, and animate the singers? Well, this masterpiece:

WATCH HERE.

And in case you missed it, ALP founder Shawn Pearce was featured on this week’s #Talkappella. Hear the replay this Saturday at 7 am EST & 7 pm EST!

Highline Vocal Jazz

Speaking of guilty pleasures….this next one is so many wonderful ones all wrapped into one. The iconic theme song from Reading Rainbow with yummy jazz chords? Yes. Please.

FACE

Let’s just continue on with the guilty pleasure trends, shall we? In full 80’s glory, this Boulder-based vocal rock band features bass Forest Kelly on lead for their cover of Blondie’s “Call Me.”

Academy

This one is just….fun. A debut music video from the University of Bristol’s all-male identifying a cappella group who were previously featured on Sky One’s Sing: Ultimate A Cappella, ICCA UK finalists and VF-UK semi-finalists in 2018.

Birdland Avenue

Not a music video, but one of the most anticipated a cappella releases of the year. Here’s the announcement of the album drop of “Come Around” straight from 4 little birdies.

OC Times

A little more goodness from the AIC Show at #BHSOrlando, OC Times celebrates their 10th anniversary of winning gold. How long until we can get “On The Road Again”?

VoicePlay

The smooth sounds of this year’s SoJam headliners on a Frank Ocean tune means your day just got better.

MO5AIC

And in what we’re sure will be the first of many a cappella holiday joys, the Las Vegas based quintet dropped a modern take in 7/8 on Little Drummer Boy, with a beat that only a mouth drummer like Jake Moulton can perform:

New Tunesday – October 23, 2018

In addition to all of the great variety of a cappella you can hear ’round the clock here at Acaville Radio, we’re going to bring you some bonus releases each Tuesday to make sure you’re finding all of the latest and greatest this talented community has to offer.

Here are our favorites this week – and there are a lot of them:

Pentatonix

Along with the announcement of their newest Holiday album (coming October 26th!), Pentatonix released their Nightmare Before Christmas-inspired video for “Making Christmas.” Tickets for their “Christmas is Here!” Tour are on sale now – shows kick off in Texas on November 25.

Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition

Catch up on (or relive!) a stellar week of barbershop from St. Louis. All of the performances are now available on YouTube.

Voctave

BHS continues to release videos from their 2018 International, including Voctave’s ultimate battle of the sexes with “Anything You Can Do” from Annie Get Your Gun.

AIC Chorus

One of the most anticipated events of the year – the Association of International Champions comes together during International to feature past quartet winners. It’s quite magical when they all sing together, like they did for this “Dig A Little Deeper” medley.

Vocal Spectrum

The 2006 Quartet Champions have STILL got it. Here’s a signature performance of “I’ve Got A Golden Ticket” during their guest performance at the 2018 Central States District Convention.

Ndlovu Youth Choir and Wouter Kellerman

Ed Sheeran sung by a South African youth choir with a flute player mixed and mastered by Bill Hare? It’s every bit as awesome as you think it should be. So much so, we’re including it here, even with the flute!

Rockapella

Just a head of the release of Jams Vol. 2, we’re treated with a preview of “Lady Mine (Bach vs. Beethoven)” which incorporates the classics in a way that only Rockapella can.

DCappella

It was another big week for DCappella – US tour dates were announced AND they dropped another video – this time for their all vocal version of “Glory Days” from Incredibles 2.

קוינטה וחצי Quinta and a Half

Leading the way for a cappella in Israel, Quinta and a Half released a dramatic video for their cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds.”

NoVI

The 2017 AcaOpen Finalists out of the UK just dropped a live looping cover of Bill Wither’s “Ain’t No Sunshine.”

The Bristol Suspensions

A little live video release from one of the top collegiate groups in the UK, we enjoyed this cover of Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande’s “Faith.”

The Eight Tracks

Challenging themselves to create something fun in under an hour, this Boston CAL group channeled OKGo for this quick mashup of Nick Jonas and Taylor Swift. See them LIVE with Fermata Town at Spire Center for the Performing Arts on November 30!

And no videos (yet!), but you should also check out the latest from:

Birdland Avenue – Rabbit Hole
Unaccompanied – PINETONESBir
Sonata Problem A Cappella – Exposition
